  2. Exercise.
    A sedentary lifestyle contributes to waste build up. On the other hand, exercise brings more blood, oxygen and nutrients to the intestines which help them function properly.
     
  3. Drink plenty of water.
    Constipation is the sign of chronic dehydration. If you're not drinking enough water, the fecal matter can become hardened, leading to constipation. 8 glasses a day.
     
  4. Avoid laxatives.
    Drugstore laxatives can actually worsen constipation, if used too often, since they remove the good bacteria and lesson the absorption of vitamins and nutrients already in your system. This includes natural laxatives like prunes and prune juice.

The problem with Vitamin C - and why you should still take it

Vitamin C must be the most familiar of all the essential nutrients. Even kids know that a glass of OJ is packed with Vitamin C.

But in conducting our research on this vitamin my team and I discovered there is quite a lot of debate in the scientific community about this remarkable nutrient.

Dr. Linus Pauling himself, the "Father of Vitamin C" and twice awarded the Nobel Prize, believed that large intakes of up to 10,000 milligrams of vitamin C each day aids anti-cancer activity within the body.

Still, researchers today don't seem to agree on what is an appropriate dosage. There is a large disagreement about the amount that the body can store. And its various health benefits are in dispute.

But here are a few facts that everyone seems to agree on...
  • Vitamin C is an antioxidant which protects the body against oxidative stress
  • It's water soluble so it easily washes away from your system.
  • The body can't produce its own Vitamin C and requires a constant supply.

Keep in mind that Vitamin C is also an ACID called ascorbate. And that brings us to the first problem with Vitamin C.

PROBLEM 1

It's nearly impossible to get too much Vitamin C from food alone, but it is possible to get too much if you're taking high dosage vitamin C supplements.

For longer life, lower your acidity levels

What are your treatment options for back pain?

Back pain has become a national epidemic. According to the Mayo Clinic, approximately 80% of all Americans will have low back pain at least once in their lives.

So what causes back pain?

  • Strain: Strained muscles, strained ligaments or lifting something improperly are the most common causes of back pain.

  • Sciatica: A sharp and shooting pain that travels through the buttock and down the back of the leg, caused by a bulging or herniated disk pressing on a nerve. 
  • Arthritis: Patients with osteoarthritis sometimes develop spinal stenosis where the space around the spinal cord narrows. 
  • Osteoporosis: Bones, including the vertebrae of the spine, become brittle and porous, making compression fractures more likely. 
  • Sleep disorders: People with sleep disorders are more likely to experience back pain, compared to others.

Your treatment options for back pain

In the case of acute and chronic back pain the most common treatments are either drugs or surgery.

Drug treatments include OTC painkillers like acetaminophen (found in Tylenol) and ordinary aspirin. But they include reported risks like liver failure and internal bleeding.

Stronger prescription drugs like NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) also include risky side effects like heart attacks and hemorrhagic strokes.

And then there is the obvious risk of having your spine tinkered with in surgery.

  • Lose weight: The fatter you are the greater your risk of developing back pain.
  • Improve your posture: Stand upright, head facing forward, back straight, and balance your weight evenly on both feet-and keep your legs straight.
  • Lift objects properly: The secret for protecting your back when lifting is to use your legs to do the lifting, more than your back. Do not straighten your legs before lifting. Otherwise, you'll be using your back for most of the work. 
  • Proper footwear: Flat shoes place less of a strain on the back. 
  • Supportive mattress: You should have a mattress that keeps your spine straight, while at the same time supporting the weight of your shoulders and buttocks. And use a pillow to help keep your neck aligned with the rest of your back, not bent into an angle.

5 Warning Signs That You're Having a Stroke

When it comes to a stroke, you (or a loved one) are in a race against a clock.

    The time between the onset of a stroke and the start of stroke treatment could mean the difference between recovery and severe brain injury.

    The key is to immediately get to the emergency room for a brain scan.
  • If you're suffering from an ischemic stroke, which results from blocked blood flow to the brain, you must be treated within 3 hours of the onset of symptoms in order for clot-busting drugs to be effective.

  3. Vision and perception problems. Stroke can diminish sight in one or both eyes or cause double vision. It can also lessen a person's ability to make sense of basic visual cues, like recognizing a face or familiar objects.  
  4. Trouble moving. Loss of coordination and balance or difficulty walking can signal that a stroke has occurred in the part of the brain where voluntary muscle coordination is controlled. 
  5. Severe headache. A painful headache out of the blue or with no known cause may signal a stroke, most often a hemorrhagic stroke.
    VERY IMPORTANT: Even if these symptoms only last a few minutes, seek medical attention at once by calling 9-1-1, or going to your local hospital emergency room.

    Strokes have impacted quite a few of my family members and it's the reason why I am so passionate about this topic.

Why We Age: Free Radicals Explained


You and I show the signs of aging because our body's cells are constantly being bombarded by "free radicals" causing damage over time.

So where do these free radicals come from? A free radical is any atom or molecule that has a single unpaired electron in an outer shell. In layman's terms, it's a loose cannon ricocheting in your body at a cellular level.

Our bodies try to protect us from free radical damage by producing enzymes that neutralize them. As we age, our ability to produce these enzymes diminishes so we must supplement this function with antioxidants found in what we eat and drink.
