Why We Age: Free Radicals Explained

You and I show the signs of aging because our body's cells are constantly being bombarded by "free radicals" causing damage over time.

So where do these free radicals come from? A free radical is any atom or molecule that has a single unpaired electron in an outer shell. In layman's terms, it's a loose cannon ricocheting in your body at a cellular level.

Our bodies try to protect us from free radical damage by producing enzymes that neutralize them. As we age, our ability to produce these enzymes diminishes so we must supplement this function with antioxidants found in what we eat and drink.

Antioxidants are a kind of "free radical scavengers." They destroy free radicals by feeding electrons to them, which neutralizes the free radical making it harmless.
